Día de Muertos

Día de Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is one of Mexico’s most meaningful and visually distinctive cultural traditions. Celebrated around the final days of October and 1–2 November, it honours departed family members through music, marigold flowers, food, decorated altars and joyful remembrance. In Mexico City, colourful Catrina figures, elaborate costumes, public installations and processions transform the capital into an extraordinary cultural setting.

The Día de Muertos experience in Mexico City extends far beyond the main parade. Monumental altars around the Zócalo, decorations along Paseo de la Reforma, museum programmes, neighbourhood celebrations and traditional markets provide visitors with a deeper understanding of Mexican heritage. The journey can also include cultural activities in districts such as Coyoacán and Xochimilco.
